Getting Ready
Blue and white porcelain with deer and Japanese maple pattern - Item Code: C000021
It represents a poem from the Hyakunin Isshu, a Japanese anthology of 100 poems, “Autumn is sad when you hear the voice of the deer crying as they fumigate the autumn leaves in the mountains” (Sarumaru Dayu (8th - 9th century)). It is a wabi-sabi world. However, it is likely that the craftsmen thought this was too lonely. The craftsman added a pine, bamboo, and plum tree on the outside(In Japan, the pine, bamboo, and plum trees are considered symbols of congratulations and good fortune. It is called three friends of the cold of the year because it is a plant that withstands the cold). It seems to express the hope that spring will eventually come, even though autumn and winter are coming.
